John is a former naval officer with experience as a defense attaché, air wing intelligence and power projection officer, Navy Criminal Investigative Service agent, special operations boat commander, intelligence training officer, and counter-terrorist planner. He holds a BA in History from the University of California, a Naval War College degree, an MS in Education from the University of Southern California, a Federal Executive Fellowship, and a Masters in Public Administration from The Evergreen State College.
John has worked as a contract administrator for the state, and at Pierce College. He left his job as interim Vice President for Extended Learning in January 2005 to accept the position of Director of the new Homeland Security Institute. He is interested in mentoring and has done training and other work with Big Brothers Big Sisters. John resides with his wife, Susan, and daughter, Lauren, in Olympia, Washington.

Carrie is interning with HSI during the summer of 2008 to further her professional experience. She is assisting with an Access data base of trainee completions, conducting web-based research for tailored delivery of the Emergency Responder Interface with Ferry Systems (ERIFS) course, and supporting HSI’s other missions.
Carrie attended Chemeketa Community College where she studied mathematics, art and writing before transferring to the University of Oregon, where she studied English, Art History and Sociology. She recently graduated from a Customized Job Skills Training program at South Puget Sound Community College. Carrie enjoys art and music, and plays the piano and the violin. She resides in Olympia, Washington.
